Why nutrition matters for runners

Nutrition plays a vital role in every runner's journey. Firstly, it significantly contributes to improved performance by providing the necessary energy for sustained effort. Secondly, proper nutrition assists in preventing sickness and injury by strengthening your immune system and supporting tissue repair and . Finally, it is fundamental for muscle development, helping your body adapt and grow stronger with each training session.

Pre-run fuelling strategies

Before a significant run or an intense training session, strategic fuelling is key to ensuring you have ample energy. The day prior to your run, it's crucial to load up on carbohydrates. Think about meals rich in pasta, rice, potatoes, or whole-grain bread. These complex carbohydrates store as glycogen in your muscles, providing a sustained energy release. A few hours before your run, opt for easily digestible carbohydrates such as a banana, toast with jam, or oatmeal. Avoid high-fat or high-fibre foods immediately before running as they can cause digestive discomfort.

In-run refuelling strategies

During a significant run or exercise sometimes extra fuel is needed to assist you to perform at your best. I recommend if sweating heavily a sports drink containing electrolytes or if you need a little extra energy. A personal favourite for me were electrolyte gels which helped me regenerate and boost me in runs. Small snacks like lollies are also good energy source's as they're small and easy to digest while running.

Post-run recovery nutrition

After your runs, what you consume is vital for recovery and preparing your body for the next session. Rehydration is paramount, so drink plenty of water. If you've experienced heavy water loss or trained in hot weather, incorporating electrolytes through sports drinks can be beneficial. Within 30-60 minutes post-run, focus on a combination of carbohydrates, protein, and water. Carbohydrates help replenish depleted glycogen stores, while protein aids in muscle repair and growth. Excellent choices include a banana with peanut butter, a protein shake, Greek yoghurt with fruit, or a turkey sandwich. This immediate nutritional intake kickstarts the recovery process, reducing muscle soreness and enhancing adaptation.
